National Blood Donor Month

January 08, 2014

National Blood Donor Month

Blood is traditionally in short supply during the winter months due to the holidays, travel schedules, inclement weather and illness.  January, in particular, is a difficult month for blood centers to collect blood donations.  A reduction in turnout can put our nation’s blood inventory at a critical low.

January has been designated as National Blood Donor Month (NBDM) to encourage donors to give or pledge to give blood.

Every day in our country, approximately 39,000 units of blood are required in hospitals and emergency treatment facilities for patients with cancer and other diseases, for organ transplant recipients, and to help save the lives of accident victims.

You don’t need a special reason to give blood; you just need your own reason!  Whatever your reason, the need is constant and your contribution is important for a healthy and reliable blood supply.  And you’ll feel good knowing you've helped change a life.

Eligibility Requirements:

  • Be healthy (Note: Healthy means that you feel well and can perform normal activities.  If you have a chronic condition such as diabetes, healthy also means that you are being treated and the condition is under control.)
  • Be at least 17 years old in most states, or 16 years old with parental consent if allowed by state law.
  • Weigh at least 110 lbs. (Additional weight requirements apply for donors 18 years old and younger and all high school donors.)

  • You get free juice and delicious cookies.
  • It's something you can spare – most people have blood to spare... yet, there is still not enough to go around.
  • You will help ensure blood is on the shelf when needed – most people don't think they'll ever need blood, but many do.
  • You will be someone's hero – in fact, you could help save more than one life with just one donation.
