Michele Quirolo Elected Chairperson for NAHC

November 03, 2008

Michele A. Quirolo Elected Chairperson of the National Association of Home Care & Hospice

Michele A. Quirolo, President & CEO of the Visiting Nurse Association of Hudson Valley has been elected Chairperson of the National Association of Home Care & Hospice (NAHC) at its 27th annual meeting held in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida from October 8-14, 2008. NAHC is the nation’s largest trade association representing home care and hospice providers, home care aide organizations and medical equipment suppliers. Currently serving as Vice Chairperson, Quirolo’s two year term as Chairperson begins January 1, 2009.

“It is an honor to have been entrusted with this responsibility and I look forward to working closely with the NAHC management team to further the visibility of home care and hospice to ensure that the critical resources to provide this care are available,” said Quirolo.

Val Halamandaris, President of NAHC commented “Michele Quirolo is one of the most caring people in the field of home care and hospice and we are richly blessed to have her elected as the Chairman of the National Association for Home Care & Hospice.”

A 30 year veteran in the field of home care, Quirolo has been at the Visiting Nurse Association of Hudson Valley (VNAHV) since 1994. During that time, Quirolo partnered with community leaders and healthcare executives to transform the agency into the area’s largest provider of home health care services established and headquartered in Westchester. She was also instrumental in growing the organization’s certified hospice program, Hospice Care in Westchester & Putnam, and the licensed private duty agency VNA Home Health Services, which offer a full continuum of home care programs.

In 2001, Quirolo led the organization’s affiliation with Sound Shore Health System, as well as the VNAHV’s inclusion in the Pinnacle Healthcare Network, the largest hospital network north of New York City. Under her tenure, Quirolo also introduced Telehealth to the Westchester community, establishing the Visiting Nurse Association of Hudson Valley as the first home health care agency in Westchester to offer this innovative service to its patients. She continues to lead the way in home care advances by recently doubling the size of the VNAHV’s Telehealth program which will serve many more individuals including hospice patients. Additionally, Quirolo has led the piloting of a community based health care kiosk project which is scheduled to begin later this year.

Quirolo’s commitment to home health care begins locally. She opens the organization’s offices and resources to training sessions for nursing students at Mercy College, an institution at which she is an adjunct professor. Responding to a need from the county, she responded to a proposal to provide community education services and support to seniors living in county apartment buildings. The program reaches underserved seniors providing them with tools and information to live healthier lives. Quirolo also oversaw the creation of a home health aide training program that is offered by the VNA Home Health Services. This program provides free training to screened candidates who wish to become certified as home health aides providing employment opportunities for residents as well as trained assistants for individuals in the community who need assistance to remain in their home or to manage daily activities.

An advocate for home care, Quirolo’s leadership positions have been numerous. She has served on the board of the National Association for Home Care & Hospice Care, Home Care Association of New York State, VNA Network, Inc. and Women’s Healthcare Network among others. Her dedication to the field was recognized in 2001 by Mercy College as a Distinguished Alumni Award recipient and then again in 2005 with the Distinguished Public Health Service Award presented by the Westchester County Board of Health.

Quirolo and her husband Louis are residents of Mount Vernon and have three children, and one grandchild.
