End of Life Care: Healing Arts Program

Healing Arts Photo

The Healing Arts Program is one aspect of our humanistic and holistic approach to hospice care. The program offers a wide range of therapies that can enable patients
with advanced illnesses to enjoy quality of life and physical comfort. Many of the available therapies are listed here, but others may be available. A doctor, nurse,
or social worker can help patients and their families select the Healing Arts therapies that will provide the greatest benefit.  They address the emotional, spiritual, and physical needs of the patients with non-medical treatments. The focus of the Healing Arts Program is on the person and not on the disease.

The Healing Arts can improve overall comfort and quality of life. Through touch, music, and art, patients can find outlets for emotion and regain a sense of connection.

  • Swedish Massage: A therapeutic massage style that uses firm but gentle pressure to improve circulation, soften muscles, improve flexibility, and create relaxation. Developed in the early 19th century, Swedish massage is the foundation for many other types of Western massage.
  • Music Therapy: An activity therapy that can include music performance, listening to music, song writing, and discussion of song lyrics. No musical ability is required. Music therapy has been shown to increase or maintain physical, mental, social, and emotional functioning.
  • Art Therapy: An activity therapy where the patient and/or family members use artistic materials to communicate feelings, memories, or experiences. No artistic ability is required. Art therapy allows the individual to express emotion without words and to share their creation with loved ones.
  • Pet Therapy: Therapy in the form of visits from a friendly dog and handler team has been shown to improve physical, social, emotional, and/or cognitive functioning. Pet therapy gives patients an event to look forward to and can rekindle positive memories. All therapy pets meet strict standards for health and training.
  • Shiatsu: A form of massage that uses gentle touch on pressure points to balance the body’s energy meridians and achieve patient comfort and deep relaxation. Shiatsu can calm the sympathetic nervous system, improving circulation, stiffness, and stress.
  • Reiki: A light touch or no-touch healing technique, Reiki encourages a state of deep relaxation and a general feeling of well-being through connection to the “universal life force.” Reiki can bring about relief on physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual levels.

Hospice Care offers only practitioners who are highly skilled and certified in their fields. Families and caregivers may participate in treatment visits, so that they can learn techniques for the care of their loved one.
