Children & Family Care: Maternal Child Health & Pediatrics Program

Mother child

The Maternal Child Health Program educates new mothers in caring for their newborns and themselves. The Pediatrics Program helps babies and children with special needs or chronic illnesses with skilled nursing care and rehabilitation therapy. Both programs offer medical social work, counseling, and referrals to community resources.

The Maternal Child Health Program supports new mothers before and after giving birth. Our team of registered nurses and social workers have extensive obstetric
training and experience in showing mothers how to prepare for birth and how to care for their newborns once they have left the hospital. The program also teaches new
mothers how to look after their own health and well-being. The program offers support and education on:

  • Basic baby care
  • Breastfeeding and nutrition
  • Bonding with the baby
  • Cord care/circumcision care
  • Maternal self-care, nutrition, and rest
  • Episiotomy/C-section care
  • Assessment of emotional and family issues
  • Short term counseling
  • Information on how to access community resources
  • Well infant care and immunizations

The Pediatrics Program provides services to infants and children with special needs and chronic illnesses, as well as their families. The program helps children with such health problems as pre-maturity, diabetes, asthma, or hypertension and receive skilled nursing care at home. The child’s pediatrician may recommend some or all or the following services:

  • Skilled nursing in the home by registered nurses, who may administer medications and perform physical exams.
  • Parental education in caring for a child with special needs or a chronic health condition.
  • Home visits from physical therapists and other rehabilitation professionals.
  • Assessments and assistance from medical social workers and counselors.
  • Information on how to access community resources.
